Krause named 2025 ASLO Sustaining Fellow

by Dauphin Island Sea Lab

Jeffrey Krause

The Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography has recognized Dauphin Island Sea Lab Senior Marine Scientist and University of South Alabama Professor Dr. Jeffrey Krause as a 2025 Sustaining Fellow. ASLO’s Fellows program honors members for outstanding contributions to the scientific community through service and research. Dr. Krause’s selection highlights his excellence in both areas.

Krause credits his ninth-grade biology teacher, Mr. Russ Quackenbush of King’s High School, with inspiring his pursuit of a career in marine science. His professional path was shaped by the guidance of key mentors, including Dr. Roland Anderson at the Seattle Aquarium; Dr. Hans Jakobsen at Shannon Point Marine Center (now at Aarhus University); Dr. Chris Gobler at Long Island University (now at Stony Brook University); Dr. David Nelson and Dr. Mike Lomas at Oregon State University (Dr. Lomas is now at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences); and Dr. Mark Brzezinski at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

He joined the DISL faculty in December 2012 and has been affiliated with the University of South Alabama since August 2013.

His research focuses on understanding the factors that control diatom (a type of single-celled algae) productivity in marine systems, how diatom biomass is transferred to consumers such as larval fish, and the climate feedbacks resulting from chemical changes to diatoms’ glass shells as they sink to ocean sediments.

He conducts research in diverse environments ranging from the northern Gulf of America to the Arctic and Antarctic.
