General Maintenance Technician

Job Description
The Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s Facility Services Department is seeking a general maintenance technician to keep the campus, including dorms, classrooms, labs, and office buildings, safe, operational, and welcoming. We are looking for a reliable, skilled technician capable of handling a wide array of trade tasks, from preventative maintenance to hands-on repairs.
Key Responsibilities
- Building & Mechanical Maintenance: Inspect, maintain, and repair heating, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC/ventilation systems to align with health and safety standards.
- General Trades & Repairs: Perform skilled carpentry (stair/deck/siding repair), plumbing fixture installations (sinks, toilets, water heaters), electrical fixture/panel repairs, appliance fixes, and basic flooring/countertop installations.
- Preventative Care & Safety: Conduct regular checks on fire/alarm systems, change air filters, manage keying/door hardware, and identify safety hazards to ensure strict compliance with OSHA and MSDS guidelines.
- Campus & Event Support: Rearrange furniture for events, prepare classrooms, move machinery/equipment, paint and remodel spaces, and assist with general ground/landscaping upkeep (mowing, trash collection).
- Equipment & Vehicle Operation: Safely operate machinery (forklifts, scissor lifts, drain augers/sewer rooters) and drive company vans/trucks to transport tools, materials, and personnel across job sites.
- Community Engagement: Assist with facility preparation and participate in our annual Discovery Day event.
Qualifications & Requirements
Experience & Education
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
- Experience: 1–3 years of general maintenance experience preferred.
- Technical Skills: Basic computer proficiency for digital record-keeping and communication; demonstrable skill with hand/power tools, propane torches, and welding equipment.
- Licensing: Valid Driver’s License required. Trade certifications or professional maintenance licenses are highly preferred.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
- Lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand for long periods, squat, crawl in tight spaces, work in tiring/uncomfortable positions, and occasionally climb ladders.
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, humidity, rain, cold) and around gas lines, fumes, and toxic chemicals using proper safety equipment.
Interpersonal Skills & Expectations
- Excellent written/oral communication skills and strong customer service etiquette with staff, students, and guests.
- Self-starter capable of working independently, managing deadlines, and troubleshooting problems effectively.
- Strong personal integrity, detail orientation, and high dependability (regular and predictable attendance is required).
- Adaptability to assist in tasks outside core expertise to meet departmental goals, including participation in a 24/7 on-call facility rotation.
