The Dauphin Island Sea Lab unveiled the triptych 9’x8’ painting ‘Gulf Ever-Changing’ Friday, February 16. Internationally-acclaimed artist Susan N. McCollough gifted the painting to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.
“We appreciate the generosity of Susan in gifting this painting to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab which will give visitors to the Shelby Center an inviting reflection of the living waters surrounding our campus,” Dr. Valentine said.
“The painting represents for me the serene, the calm, the tumultuous expression of the waves,” McCollough shared. “It’s a combination of the science and art and I feel very fortunate to have been able to present this painting to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.
McCollough’s vast collection of abstract, expressionistic art displays worldwide. In 2017, she was named artist of the year by Art Tour International and honored at a show and ceremony in Florence, Italy.
The University of Alabama commissioned McCollough to create a painting in honor of her late professor and life-long mentor, Al Sella. The 4’x5’ painting, ‘Sella’, hangs in the College of Arts and Sciences Clark Hall.
McCollough was born in the Bronx, New York, grew up in Dothan, Alabama, and now resides in Gulf Shores. Visitors to Gulf Shores can often find McCollough at work in her studio and gallery located next to the villas at the McCollough Institute.
‘Gulf Ever-Changing’ is one of six paintings McCollough has gifted to organizations.
