Hurricane Run 5K to be held September 9
The Port City Pacers will once again host the Hurricane Run 5K and Fun Run on Dauphin Island. The 5K course flat, fast course starts and ends at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Proceeds from the run support the Dauphin Island Volunteer Fire Department and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab scholarship programs. To register, visit pcpacers.org.
University Seminars return September 7
Dr. Syed Khalil with the Coastal Protection & Restoration Authority will open the fall seminar series. Seminars are set up by University Programs faculty cover a variety of topics throughout the year. Students on and off campus are invited to attend to learn more about what is happening in the marine science community. Topics include oysters, restoration, hypoxia, and more. This year's Coastal Cleanup is September 16 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. Check-in for Dauphin Island is at Cadillac Square. If you would like to pre-register a group for the cleanup you can email Caitlin Wessel at cwessel@disl.org.
National Estuaries Day set for September 23
The Dauphin Island Sea Lab will celebrate National Estuaries Day on Saturday, September 23 with half price admission to the Estuarium from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nationwide, Restore America's Estuaries partners with organizations like the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the National Estuary Program to shine a spotlight on the importance of our estuaries. Estuaries, like Mobile Bay, is where freshwater meets saltwater. Our estuaries are economically and environmentally important, because they serve has a nursery habitat for many commercially and recreationally important fish and shellfish, such as oysters, shrimp and red snapper. It is important for us to be good stewards and protect this vital part of our community. Along with the self-guided tour of the Estuarium, Discovery Hall Programs will have displays for you to learn about the animals living in our estuary, the dangers they face, and how you can protect their habitat.
Wiese Lecture Series
The 19th annual Wiese Distinguished Lecutre Series will present Dr. Donald Anderson, Senior Scientist in the Biology Department of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He also serves as Director of the Coastal Ocean Institute. Details are still being organized for the public lecture planned for Monday, October 2. We'll share the details as soon as they are released.
Register today for Teacher Workshop, Exploring the Deep Ocean with NOAA
Discovery Hall Programs invites all educators to Explore the Deep Ocean with NOAA at their teacher workshop on Friday, November 17. The deadline to register is November 3. Educators will learn more about the importance of deep ocean exploration and the current technologies used to explore the deep ocean. Ocean health, unique underwater habitats, undewater mapping and remotely operated vehicles are just a few of the topics to be addressed. To learn how to register, log onto disl.org/dhp.
Marine Environmental Awards Luncheon
The Dauphin Island Sea Lab Foundation will host the Fifth Annual Marine Environmental Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Renaissance Riverview Hotel in downtown Mobile. This will be a wonderful luncheon featuring award-wining Scientist, Dr. Carl Safina. Awards will also be presented to an individual and a business or organization that have made outstanding contributions to marine environmental sustainability in the Alabama Gulf Coast Region.
