The Dauphin Island Sea Lab represented well at several conferences during the month of November.
Several students, staff, and faculty members attended the CERF 2017 scientific program in Providence, Rhode Island and the 9th annual U.S. Harmful Algal Bloom Symposium.
The weeklong CERF conference brought together a diverse group of marine scientists to discuss coastal and estuarine studies.
University Programs Chair Dr. Ken Heck is past president of CERF's Governing Board, and Dr. Ruth Carmichael is a member of the conference committee. Along with Heck and Carmichael, DISL attendees included Heck Lab members Dottie Byron, Alex Rodriguez, and Candela Marco Mendez, Carmichael Lab members Kayla DaCosta and Elizabeth Hieb, and Cebrian Lab member Ryan Parker.
The CERF conference focuses on applying research to policy and management. It's also a very student friendly confernece.
"CERF brings young people into the fold to help improve their credentials and marketibility," Dr. Heck said. "There's a great deal of networking and mentors available for students and young professionals."
Parker was one of 11 attending the conference as a 2017 Rising TIDES (Toward an Inclusive, Diverse, and Enriched Society) Conference Mentoring Program award winner. His mentor was Chris Madden of the South Florida Water Management District.
The city of Mobile will learn a great deal more about CERF. With moonpies flying, the conference announced its 2019 location will be the Port City.
During the Harmful Algal Bloom Symposium in Baltimore, master's students Clay Bennett (Dr. Alison Robertson's Lab) and Alex Marquez (Dr. Jeff Krause's Lab) presented their work.
The theme of the symposium highlighted harmful algae and its environmental effects scientists are working to better understand. It is the only national confernece focused exclusively on HABs.
Upcoming conferences for our faculty, students, and staff include the American Geophysical Union Conference to be held in New Orleans in December and the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography Ocean Sciences Meeting in Portland, Oregon in February.
