What we know is, to a large degree, dictated by how we know it. Think of the invention of the microscope in the 1600s and how it opened up our understanding of biology. Similarly, the development of technological tools has expanded our understanding of the ocean. In many cases, these tools have been developed and built by the scientists using them.

Join us for a hands-on tour of some of the critical technologies that have dramatically increased our understanding of the marine environment. We’ll explore the marine environment around Dauphin Island from the surface waters to the ocean bottom through the building and testing of hydrophones (underwater microphones), current drifters, ROVs, sensor systems, and other technologies tools. We’ll also take time to build these tools, experience the engineering design process and discuss STEM lesson plans and activities that will work for your learning environment.

The Exploring STEM in the Ocean workshop is suitable for educators working with elementary through high school students, afterschool groups, or informal learning center audiences.

The Exploring STEM in the Ocean workshop is FREE with support from the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium. However, to hold your space, a deposit of $100 is due upon receipt of the confirmation email. This deposit is refundable upon completion of the workshop.

Please note that due to the funding source, priority is given to active educators in Mississippi and Alabama until April 1, 2024. Educators from other areas may register prior to April 1 (and need not submit the deposit) but will be placed on a waiting list.

Registration for all will be opened on April 1 and available spaces will be filled from the existing waitlist pending completion of enrollment.
