Build a ROV: A Virtual STEM Workshop
Dates: Offered virtually, February 2, 9, 16, and 23, 2023 (8 total hours).
Cost: $50 registration fee plus ROV Angelfish* kit and tools
Are you interested in bringing underwater robotics into your teaching, but want a bit of direction first? If so, join us for this virtual workshop consisting of 4 weekly sessions of 2 hours each.
Through guided instruction, you will build a MATE Angelfish ROV from the circuit board up so that by the last session, you’ll have a fully functional ROV and are confident in guiding your students through building a ROV!
You’ll explore the skills and concepts behind the ROV’s electronics, waterproofing, tether construction, motor integration, and frame design during weekly discussions and group and individual work.
Sessions will take place Thursday afternoons from 4 to 6 p.m. CST, every Thursday in February (2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23). You can expect to spend a few hours working outside of these sessions to complete some construction phases. Prior to the workshop, you will need to have an Angelfish (or Pufferfish*) ROV kit purchased from the SeaMate store.
You will also need to have a few tools on hand (ruler, scissors, heat gun, wire cutter/stripper/crimper, Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, PVC cutter, multimeter; a jeweler’s set of screwdrivers may also be helpful).
Please email DHPWorkshops@disl.edu or call (251) 861-2141 x7515 with any questions.
A Pufferfish kit may be substituted but will require an additional session and/or additional time outside of the scheduled sessions for completion of the control box. In addition, a soldering iron and solder will be needed.
