Faculty Position, Marine Science

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab invites applications for an open-rank faculty position in Marine Science. DISL faculty hold the title of Senior Marine Scientist and receive a joint faculty appointment at an Alabama university, with academic rank commensurate with experience.

Description

We seek a faculty member to join and strengthen our growing community of scientists studying marine and coastal vertebrates. We welcome candidates with diverse areas of expertise, and relevant research areas may include foraging ecology, population and movement ecology, stranding response, health and disease, ecotoxicology, physiology, behavior, bioacoustics, genetics and genomics, quantitative ecology, and conservation science.

DISL is also home to the Marine Mammal Stranding Network and the Manatee Sighting Network, and candidates whose research can integrate with these programs are encouraged to apply.

As DISL continues to build a premier research program focused on higher-level marine and coastal vertebrates, the successful candidate will:

• Conduct research on higher vertebrates, including marine or coastal reptiles, birds, and mammals;
  or
  
• Apply innovative marine science approaches that leverage existing data and resources generated through DISL’s vertebrate research programs.

We welcome candidates whose research complements and enhances our efforts to advance the understanding, conservation, and management of marine and coastal vertebrate species and the ecosystems they inhabit.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program
• teach one graduate course during the academic year and one undergraduate course offered during DISL’s summer program
• advise students (primarily at the graduate level), and
• participate in Dauphin Island Sea Lab outreach activities.

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. (or similar terminal degree) in marine science, environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related discipline at the time of appointment.
• Proven research background as evidenced by a peer reviewed publication record and recognition in the field commensurate with experience.

Preferences:

• Research interests that complement those of existing DISL faculty.
• Post-doctoral experience of at least 2 years in their field of research.
• Strong track record developing a well-funded research program.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching, with strong communication skills.
• Experience with and commitment to quality mentoring and advising students.
