(February 12, 2016) --

SouthJaw the Tiger Shark made his global debut Wednesday. He can now be tracked via the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker.

SouthJaw was tagged by scientists at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the University of South Alabama last year. An undergraduate student named SouthJaw in tribute to South Alabama's mascot SouthPaw.

"We're thrilled to partner with the team at OCEARCH and their unique Global Shark Tracker," Dr. Marcus Drymon, research marine scientist, said. "Through this platform, SouthJaw can reach the widest possible audience. Such unparalleled access not only provides a glimpse into the movements of this particular tiger shark, but promotes awareness of the conservation efforts directed at these magnificent fish."

SouthJaw was tagged, according to Dr. Drymon, to better understand movement and possibly shed light on the unusual feeding ecology of the Tiger Shark in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Along with SouthJaw's profile page on OCEARCH, he also has his own Twitter profile, @theSouthJaw.
